Karl Caldwell

Mental Performance Consultant

Hi, I’m Karl, a Toronto based Mental Performance Consultant.

I help athletes, performing artists, business professionals, coaches, parents, and teams develop the mental skills needed to perform at their best both now and in the future. My work is evidence-based, collaborative, and tailored to each person’s unique goals, challenges, and performance environment.

I believe that mental skills can be developed just like physical and technical skills. Whether someone wants to perform more consistently under pressure, build confidence, improve focus, navigate setbacks, or better support the development of others, my goal is to help them develop practical skills they can apply when it matters most.

At the heart of my approach is a simple principle: before we can decide what to work on, we first need to understand the person behind the performance.

My interest in mental performance began through my own experiences in sport.

Growing up in Norway, football (soccer) was always an important part of my life. I spent many years playing the game before turning my focus to refereeing, eventually progressing to the lower professional levels of Norwegian football. Through these experiences, I became fascinated by the psychological side of performance: why confidence can disappear, why pressure affects people so differently, and why we can sometimes struggle to perform in the moments that matter most.

That curiosity led me to study psychology and, eventually, specialise in sport and performance psychology. I wanted to better understand the psychological factors that influence performance, and more importantly, learn how to help people develop practical skills they can use when needed.

Since then, I have had the opportunity to support individuals and teams across a range of sports and performance environments, from recreational to elite level. Through this work, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: there is no single mental skill, strategy, or mindset that works for everyone.

That belief continues to shape how I work today. Rather than starting with a predetermined solution, I start by getting to know the person, their goals, strengths, challenges, and environment. Just as importantly, I help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and how they respond in different situations. This foundation of self-awareness allows us to identify what will genuinely help and to develop practical mental skills that are tailored to the individual.

My Story

My Approach

Understanding yourself is the foundation for meaningful change.

I believe that effective mental performance consulting begins with understanding the person behind the performance. Before deciding what to work on, I take the time to understand each client's goals, strengths, challenges, experiences, and performance environment.

A central part of my approach is helping clients develop greater self-awareness. By better understanding how they think, feel, behave, and respond in different situations, clients can begin to recognise the patterns that help or hinder their performance. This helps us understand not only what we need to work on, but how and why it will be helpful.

From there, we work collaboratively to establish meaningful goals and develop practical mental skills tailored to the individual. Depending on the person, this might involve developing confidence, managing pressure and emotions, improving focus, strengthening motivation, or responding more effectively to mistakes and setbacks.

The work does not stop at learning a skill. Mental skills need to be practised and applied in the environments where performance actually happens. Together, we explore how to integrate these skills into preparation, training, competition, and other high-pressure situations, before reflecting on what worked, what did not, and what we can adapt moving forward.

My role is not to provide a predetermined solution or tell clients how they should think. It is to help them better understand themselves, develop skills that are meaningful to them, and become increasingly confident in managing their own performance.

Experience

Over the past several years, I have had the privilege of supporting athletes, coaches, parents, teams, and organisations across a variety of sports and performance environments. My experience includes one-on-one consulting, team support, workshops, and educational presentations, working with individuals ranging from recreational participants to elite athletes competing at national and international levels.

My work has included supporting performers in sports such as golf, football (soccer), volleyball, and others, while also applying mental performance principles within the performing arts, politics, and business settings. Regardless of the environment, my goal remains the same, to help people develop practical psychological skills that allow them to perform with greater confidence, consistency, and resilience.
